How Much Does EV Car Maintenance Really Cost in India?

Everywhere you hear the same line – “EVs have very low maintenance.” People say since there’s no engine oil, clutch, or exhaust system, maintaining an electric vehicle costs almost nothing. But honestly, the reality is slightly different.

In this blog, I’ll share my real experience with my Tata Nexon EV 45 kWh, which I have driven 40,000+ km in just 10 months.

📌 Service Interval: Every 7,500 km

When I bought the EV, I thought service visits would be very rare. But the Tata Nexon EV has a service interval of 7,500 km.

  • At 7,500 km → Minor Service
  • At 15,000 km → Major Service

This means I have to take the car to the service center after every 7,500 km.

👉 Since I have already crossed 40,000 km, I’ve had to visit the service center 5 times for regular servicing and 4 additional times for repairs in just 10 months, which feels quite frequent compared to ICE cars.

💰 Service Cost Breakdown

Here’s what I’ve spent so far:

  • Minor Service (every 7,500 km): ₹3,000 – ₹3,500
  • Major Service (every 15,000 km): ₹5,500 – ₹7,000

So, if we look at one cycle of 15,000 km, the cost comes to:
₹3,000 + ₹6,500 = ~₹9,500

Now, my upcoming 45,000 km service is showing an estimated cost of ₹6,300 on the Tata iRA app (which usually ends up slightly higher).

🔄 Comparison with My Diesel XUV300

When I compare this with my old Mahindra XUV300 Diesel:

  • Service interval was every 10,000 km (less frequent than my EV).
  • Average service cost: ₹4,000 – ₹4,500.
  • Engine oil change was only required during major service (every 20,000 km), which further reduced the overall cost.

This means EV service is not always cheaper – at least in my real-world usage.

⚙️ EV Parts Are Costlier Too

Another thing people don’t talk about – EV spare parts are expensive compared to ICE cars. Even though there’s no engine oil change, there are still fluids (like coolant, brake fluid, gearbox oil) and parts that need replacement. And when it comes to repairs, EV components generally cost more.

✅ My Honest Conclusion

I’m not criticizing EVs – in fact, I love driving mine and don’t regret the decision. But it’s important to show the real picture:

  • EV maintenance is not zero or low.
  • Service intervals can feel more frequent than ICE cars.
  • Costs can sometimes be higher than diesel/petrol cars, depending on usage.

This is my personal experience, and yours may be different. But if you’re planning to buy an EV, don’t just assume that maintenance will always be negligible. Go in with the right expectations, and you’ll enjoy the EV life much more.
